William Giannobile, D.D.S., D.Med.Sc.

Dr. William Giannobile is the Najjar Endowed Professor Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.  He is also a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering.  He received his DDS and MS in Oral Biology from the University of Missouri.  He later received his Certificate in Periodontology and Doctor of Medical Sciences in Oral Biology from Harvard University.  He subsequently completed postdoctoral training in Molecular Biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Giannobile previously served as a faculty member at Harvard and the Forsyth Institute.  He has served as a Visiting Professor at the Biotechnology Institute of Regenerative Medicine at the University of Genoa Medical School in Genova, Italy in 2006 and in 2013 as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London.

Dr. Giannobile has lectured extensively in the area of Periodontal Regenerative Medicine, Tissue Engineering and Personalized Medicine.  Dr. Giannobile currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Dental Research. He has edited textbooks on clinical research, periodontal regeneration and translational research. He is a past president of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation. Dr. Giannobile is a consultant to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for Dental Devices. Dr. Giannobile has received numerous awards from the AAP including the Robinson Regeneration Award, Clinical Research Award and the Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Academy of Periodontology for his research contributions to the field. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and practices in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Enhancing periodontal health through regenerative approaches

This lecture will highlight the use of periodontal regenerative medicine therapies such as bone grafting, guided tissue regeneration and newly emerging clinical treatments for patients to preserve the dentition.  The lecture will highlight the value of tooth retention and the clinical reality of periodontal regeneration to promote tooth preservation in lieu of the more aggressive current treatment paradigm of extractions and implants over regeneration.

Gene therapy for oral regenerative medicine

This lecture will highlight the advances in medicine on the controlled delivery of genes to promote wound repair and regeneration.  The presentation will highlight innovations in medicine being applied in oral medicine and periodontology.

Personalised and precision medicine

This lecture will highlight the advances in personalised or precision medicine and applications to dental practice.  New advances in salivary diagnostics are allowing customized treatment protocols to use genetic, protein biomarkers and clinical information to target therapeutics to the "right" patients.  These approaches are being used in medicine in areas such as in the treatment of cancer and cardiovascular diseases.  This presentation will highlight personalised approaches for the treatment of periodontal disease and also give examples in dental caries and oral cancer.

Local periodontal and systemic relationships: How to better promote total health to our patients

This lecture will highlight the inter-relationship between oral infection such as periodontal disease and systemic issues such as osteoporosis, arthritis and cardiovascular diseases.  Stronger clinical data show how oral health impacts and wellness can lead to total body health.

Tissue engineering for teeth and implants

This lecture will highlight innovations in the use of cell, protein and scaffolding technologies to promote tissue regeneration.  The use of clinical use of stem cells (both autologous and allogeneic), proteins (growth factors such as BMPs, PDGF and FGF-2) and 3D printed scaffolds will be presented.
