Optional Activities


Booking your Optional Activities

The optional activities are available to delegates and their guests.  Please indicate your attendance on the registration form or via the online registration process. A ticket will be required for entry to all activities.

All tours require a minimum of 10 passengers per tour, the the exception of the Arthurs Pass/TranzAlpine Tour which has a minimum of 20 passengers.  A 50% cancellation fee will apply to the Arthurs Pass/TranzAlpine tour after Friday 19 March.

All finish times are indicative only.

For all optional activities, lunch boxes will be provided.  Please pick up your lunchbox (ticket required) prior to leaving the Convention Centre.  Transport details for optional activities will be available in the Meeting Handbook.

Please advise the Meeting Secreatariat in writing if you wish to cancel an optional activity.  No refunds will be given after Friday 23 April 2010.

The "It's Actually Fun" Run

Date: Sunday 2 May
Time: 0715
Venue: Meet at the main entrance of the Convention Centre

No cost - just bring yourself!

An event for the discerning plodder. Jog around North Hagley Park while gently recovering from your late night at the College Cocktail Reception. Flat terrain on even tracks, but may involve dodging golf balls and people out walking the dog. We still recommend running shoes and warm/ waterproof clothes, depending on the weather. The course will be 4 – 5 km long, passing through the botanical gardens and around historic Christ’s College. The run should end before 0800, in time for a quick shower, breakfast and the plenary session.



Fun Run

Date: Monday 3 May
Time:1300-1730
Cost: NZD$35 incl. GST

A “Fun Run” for the more discerning (serious) runner. The run will be about 14km in length, be mostly off road, involve some climbing and uneven ground, no joggers please!  About after 5km a shorter return could be followed (total distance about 9km).  See this route on Map My Run for details, note the distance shown on the link (18.22km) is NOT correct.

We will start by catching the Gondola to the top of the Port Hills; views over Christchurch, the Pacific Ocean, Southern Alps and Lyttelton Harbour - weather permitting! There may be mud and water, wear suitable running shoes/clothes with over clothes in case it is cold/damp. The run will end at a bar on the beach.


    

Golf

Date: Monday 3 May

Venue: Shirley Golf Club www.christchurchgolf.co.nz
Cost: NZD$80 incl. GST
Transport: Coach leaves Convention Centre at 1100 and returns at 1800.
Lunch: Box lunches will be available on the bus.

Situated close to the city centre, Shirley is one of the top courses in the country; a challenge for all golfers.  Founded in 1873 it is the second oldest club in NZ and has Sir Bob Charles as its patron.

The afternoon will be played in groups of four and is an individual par and 4-ball best ball par competition.  The competition will be a shotgun start from multiple tees and prizes will be presented at the conclusion of play.  Light refreshments will be available at the 19th hole.  Competition prizes are only open to Fellows with club handicaps – the maximum allowed being 27. (Fellows without handicaps , Associates and Trade may also play but are not eligible to win the ANZCA trophy).

As with other courses of this standard, dress and etiquette codes must be strictly adhered to; golf shoes must be worn, T shirts and beach shorts are not acceptable and be prepared for possible inclement weather.

Tennis Coaching, Skills and General Fun Afternoon

Venue: The Scenic Circle Hotel’s Indoor Tennis Centre
Cost: NZ $75.00 incl. GST

Join us at The Scenic Circle Hotel’s Indoor Tennis Centre which offers six Rebound Ace courts. Racquets available for nominal hire or try out latest demo models (for free!). Focusing on doubles play, the participants will also rotate through specific skills coaching with the resident coach on these superb indoor courts. Suitable for all skill levels. Non-marking soles essential. Full bar will be available.
                         

Waipara Wine Tour

Date: Monday 3 May

The South Island of New Zealand has some of the southernmost vineyards in the world with climatic conditions which produce distinctive wines that cannot be found anywhere else. The Waipara Valley is Canterbury’s premier wine growing region and is located 50 minutes north of Christchurch. It is an ideal cool climate grape growing region with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominating local plantings.


Tour details:
Tour departs: 12.30pm from the Christchurch Convention Centre
Tour concludes: Guests returned to the Christchurch Convention Centre at approx 6.00pm
    





Arthurs Pass/TranzAlpine Tour

Date: Monday 3 May
Time: 12515-1830
Cost: NZD$149 incl. GST

Travel by coach across the Canterbury Plains and through the spectacular Porters Pass, enroute to Arthurs Pass National Park. We continue to Otira to view the 440 metre viaduct - one of the most notable environmental engineering achievements in New Zealand. On returning to Arthurs Pass you will have time to browse the village and take a short walk (time permitting), before joining the TranzAlpine Train (rated as one of the top train journeys in the world) for the return journey to Christchurch. Refreshments are available for purchase from the train on the return journey.

 

    


Adrenalin Forest Challenge

For a fun and challenging adrenalin filled afternoon come and test your balance, work against gravity and prove your agility as you negotiate and master the pathways positioned high up in a coastal forest.

With 6 levels of tree to tree pathways ranging from 1.5 meter to 20 meters high & nearly 2 km long, this is suitable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels. A minimum height of 1.45m is required.

    

City Orientation Tour and Gondola

Date: Monday 3 May

Enjoy a spectacular ride far above the city, as your 4 person cabin lifts you gently up to 500m (1500ft) above sea level over the 945m ride. Stunning 360° views extend over Pegasus Bay and the Pacific Ocean to Kaikoura; over Banks Peninsula, Lake Ellesmere and Lyttelton Harbour, and across the Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps.

Our coach tour will show you the city highlights such as Cathedral Square, Victoria Square, the Avon River, Town Hall, Law Courts, Christ’s College, Museum, Art Gallery, Botanical Gardens, the Arts Centre, Catholic Cathedral, Mona Vale Gardens, and we also travel out to the seaside suburb of Sumner and the Port of Lyttelton.

The Rough
An afternoon of trail riding and freat views on Christchurch's Port Hills. Your guide will select trails suitable to your skill level and fitness.  From gnarly downhill tracks to pleasant undulating trails through the tussocks.

The Smooth
An afternoon of guided road riding on the incomparable "Long bays" circuit. 80km of both flat and undulating roadway through the ancient volcanic caldera of Lyttelton Harbour.

4 Wheel Drive and Jet Boat Adventures

Enjoy a scenic road tour across the Canterbury Plains to the spectacular Waimakariri River Gorge where you will board the famous Hamilton jetboat for an exciting 45 minute jetboat ride on one of New Zealand’s most impressive rivers. The afternoon also includes an off-road scenic experience by 4-wheel-drive vehicle across Mt Torlesse Station. This station is a 10,000 acre working sheep and cattle farm situated in the spectacular foot hills of the Southern Alps.
    

Cooking Demonstration at Jo Seagar's and Walnuts of Canterbury

This afternoon we travel to Oxford, home to New Zealand's best known celebrity chef Jo Seagar's cafe, cooking school and shop.  Jo will host a one hour cooking demonstration in the cook school with recipies to take away, followed by a three course lunch and wine. While you are here you can check out the latest kitchen gadgets at the adjoining cook shop.

Across the Canterbury Plains in West melton, we visit a walnut orchard that has been developing under the direction of owner Jenny Lawrence since 1996. Jenny will provide an interesting overview of the industry, with a visit to the orchard & processing plant, followed by a tasting of a selection of her products such as walnut oil, paste, flour, dukkah, chutney and pickled walnuts.
    

Antarctic Centre Tour and Airforce Museum

Visit two of Christchurch’s renowned centres of interest including the International Antarctic Centre and The Air Force Museum of New Zealand.

At the Antarctic Centre you can walk through the Four Seasons, have fun in the snow & ice in the polar room, and experience the chill of the Antarctic Storm. See little blue penguins in the indoor/outdoor viewing area and take an exciting ride on the adventure course in the Antarctic Hagglund.

The Airforce Museum holds the national collection of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and takes you through the history of aviation in New Zealand, with superbly restored aircraft, outstanding displays, and hands on fun activities for all ages.

   




Akaroa Scenic Tour

Visit the beautiful historic village  of Akaroa known for its French heritage, majestic scenery and rare wildlife.

Travel the scenic route to Akaroa, over the Port hills, viewing the scenic coves and bays of Banks Peninsula, formed from an extinct volcano.

In Akaroa township you will have time to explore this historic and picturesque village, with its notable cottages and buildings, gardens, galleries & museum, and local craft shops. Included in your tour is a visit to a unique mosaic sculptured garden in Akaroa “Linton”, home of Josie Martin.

    

Guided Arts Tour

This afternoon our art guide will introduce you to a fascinating and eclectic mix of art with visits to renowned contemporary galleries and project spaces providing you with an interesting overview of Christchurch's art scene.
