Session Information

Keynote Sessions

Can we fix it?
Professor Michael Fehlings

• What are the implications and impact of spinal cord regeneration (including stem cells)?
• Conservative management versus early intervention?
• What does current research identify in relation to bladder, bowel, spasticity, pain, respiratory and nutritional management?
• Can we fix the impairment or limitations?
• How can we prevent acute complications?

Use it or lose it ?
Professor Richard Faull

Can keeping mind and body active enhance outcomes for both?
• What is the evidence?
• Does keeping mentally active, enhance recovery and subsequent functioning?
• Can physical activity influence stem cell repair in the brain?
• Does physical activity/exercise benefit those with SCI?
• Does social activity/community re-integration benefit those with SCI?

Can we stop ourselves from wearing out?
Dr Susie Charlifue

• What are the implications and impact of ageing with a spinal cord injury, and the physical, medical and psychosocial complications associated with this?
• What is the evidence?
• How does an intact nerve supply encourage repair in joints (i.e. what is the basis for the neuropathic Charcot’s joint disorder)?
• Does exercise/activity have a negative impact on the musculoskeletal system?
• What else do we know that can assist with limiting the impact of wearing out?
• What needs regular monitoring in ageing with SCI?

What is Rehabilitation?
Dr Pat Dorestt

If the successful rehabilitation of individuals following spinal cord impairment is the aim of our spinal services, the following questions need to answered:
• What psychosocial factors enable some people to rehabilitate more easily and successfully than others?
• What does that successful rehabilitation look like?  Is that our measure or the individuals?
• What influence do we have as health professionals to ensure rehabilitation will be successful?
• Has rehabilitation changed in the last ten years?  Are rehabilitation outcomes improving?

Workshops

How can we make sure an Individual's Community and Vocational Re-integration is successful?
Dr Patricia Dorsett

A wide ranging discussion regarding "best-practices" for community re-integration and advances in early intervention vocational rehabilitation. Questions like:
• How best to maintain the rehabilitation momentum post-discharge?
• How soon is too soon for a return to work?
• What are the appropriate levels of support after discharge? (Not too much, not too little)
This will involve presentations describing practitioner perspectives and a panel of consumers to share and discuss their experiences and perspectives too.

Whose outcome is it anyway?
Jean Hay-Smith, Susie Charlifue, Maria Low, Claire Freeman, Anne Sinnott

Expected Outcomes:
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• Identify the domains within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) that can be used to structure evaluation of outcomes for persons with spinal cord injury (SCI).
• Describe how the use of a multi-faceted model of outcomes measurement contributes toward evidence-based practice.
• Identify one effective outcome measure within each domain of the ICF to measure functional outcomes following SCI.

Professional Boundaries:  Are they still relevant to contemporary practice?
Patricia Fronek, Melissa Kendall

Aim:  This workshop aims to explore the challenges faced by both professionals and managers when dealing with these complex issues and the solutions.  Frameworks for training and policy development are explored.

Expected Outcomes:
Participation in this workshop will provide professionals and managers with increased awareness and understanding of issues faced by individuals and organizations on a daily basis; present possibilities for multidisciplinary training and professional development frameworks; and provide the basis for policy development relevant to diverse organisations.
