The SI Half Ironman is the South Islands top triathlon competition and has been recognised by Triathlon NZ as an officially sanctioned event.
We will be running the Half Marathon again in 2010. The half marathon course will be around Lake Hood, providing a relaxed and scenic environment in the clean air of mid-Canterbury! Click here to find out more about the Half Marathon.
All events focus in or around Lake Hood, just 70 minutes drive from Christchurch in a beautiful rural setting. This makes a perfect environment for a sports event. All races start and finish at the Lake House bar and restaurant on the waters edge of Lake Hood and is a perfect spot for spectators and supporters to watch the action unfold.

With a sprint distance, half ironman distance and half marathon on the programme there is plenty of choice no matter what your fitness level. Teams or individuals, experienced triathlon goers or beginners, there is something for everyone at this event!

Registration options are as follows where you will register and pick up race pack with timing transponder and race numbers:

Saturday 20 November Saturday 20 November, morning from 6.30am - Registration will stay open until the start of the last event.
Please note - We recommend the Half Marathon competitors register from 7.45am as most triathletes will have registered by then and this will help reduce congestion and minimise wait times.

Transition and Finish area The start, finish and transition area is all based on the grass area in front of The Lake House restaurant.
Half Ironman 1900m 8.30am Start Sprint Course 650m 9.00am Start
Water Start, all categories will start together in one wave.
Starting in the canal in front of the Lake House Restaurant. Heading out to the lake to a box course keeping the buoys to your right hand side in a clockwise direction. The swim exit will be back at the start and swimmers will exit via a ramp onto the timber boardwalk and run in front of the restaurant deck across the grass and road to the transition area.
Half Ironman complete two laps course 1900m. Sprint tri complete a one lap of course 650m.

Proceed out of transition towards the exit onto Lake Hood Road, Turn Right onto Strangers Road, Turn Left onto Grahams Road, Proceed ahead onto Griffiths Road, Proceed ahead onto Fords Road, Proceed to U turn on Fords Road (near Grahams Road Tee intersection), Return by the same route. When back at transition U turn to repete 3 times.

Race Rules
General:
- TRINZ race rules will apply to this event.
- It is the competitor's responsibility to know the course and remain on the correct course.
- Race numbers must be worn front and back. Those wearing race belts need to ensure that your race number is on your back during the bike and on your front during the run so that the time keepers at the finish can record your correct time.
- The team cyclist needs to wear the number of their back and the team runner needs to wear the number on the front.
- Please remember that New Zealand road code rules must be obeyed at all times. (You must keep left of the centre line at all times)
- All Road Code rules must be obeyed
- No Ipods allowed while racing
Swim Note: Wetsuits will be permitted and recommended. The water temperature is on average between 16-19 degrees.
Cycle:
- Road code rules apply.
- Keep left on all roads and do not cross the centre line. Penalty is Disqualification.
- Cycle helmets must be on your head and securely fastened before you remove your cycle from the bike rack. You must leave your helmet securely fastened until you have completed racking your cycle back in the bike rack.
- This is a rural area so please be aware farm vehicles may come onto the road from farming properties, so be alert.
- Drafting is not permitted.
This event is a non drafting event. Marshals will be out on the course. (The gap between the rear edge of the back wheel of the bike in front and the front edge of your wheel must be 5 meters. Put more simply there needs to be a gap large enough to park a large car in then a bit of room front and back). If a competitor is caught drafting a 2 minet stop/go penalty will be enforced immediately. This will be taken on the side of the road. On completion of the penalty to the satisfaction of the drafting official the competitor may continue the race.
Run:
- You must remain on the course where possible.
- Run towards oncoming traffic where foot path is not available.
- If you decide to withdraw from the event you must tell a marshal at the finish area.
- You must keep to the course.
- If you leave the course you must return where you left it to carry on.
NZTA race rules apply and will be those published as at race day. Knowledge of the course and rules is the responsibility of the competitor.

Prize giving We will have the Short course Triathlon Prizegiving around midday. This is to avoid athletes waiting until 4.00pm for the prizegiving.
Prize giving for Half Ironman will be held at 4.00pm at Lake Hood at the Finish area at the Lake House Restaurant.
Spot Prizes Spot prizes will be given out following the awards presentation by a random race number draw. To be in the draw on completion of your race place your race number in the container provided. You must be present to collect any spot prize.

Rules to Remember for Cheer Squad, Family & Friends
DO NOT bike, drive or run beside a competitor on any part of the course. This is outside assiDO NOT bike, drive or run beside a competitor on any part of the course. This is outside assistance and can lead to disqualification of that competitor.
DO NOT use permanent paint or crayon for graffiti on any road. Chalk is acceptable but where permanent paint graffiti is identified to a competitor, that competitor will be disqualified.
DO make sure your competitor has read and knows the Race Rules pertaining to this race, and has thoroughly read this document.
DO make sure your competitor keeps his/her Competitor Bib No# secured to clothing
The Lake House restaurant will have a selection of food and beverage available for purchase.

Cycle Course The aid station on the 90km cycle course is at the turn around 22.5km from start stocked with - water and electrolyte drink- No Gels will be provided at these stations.
Slow down when entering pickup zone; don't stop!
Discard bidons in designated area prior to pick up zone. Do not discard on any other part of course. You are required to start the event will all bidon cages on your cycle full.
Mechanic/Spares: Spares and bike mechanic will be based at the start finish area if assistance is required.
Run Course There are a total of three aid stations per lap, maximum 2.5k apart.

St Johns First Aid will be available throughout the race and on the course. Please ask for medical help if you have any hint that you may need it. Conditions on the day may be hot, humid and windy.

Balance will be supplying their Restore energy drink in Orange and their Tropical Squeeze Gels with caffeine. The Restore energy drink will be available, along with water at all aid stations on the Run and at the bottle swap aid station on the bike. The Gels will be available on the transition area aid station.

Refunds will only be given for Half Ironman athletes who withdraw prior to 14 November less a $50 administration fee. There will be refunds less expenses incurred to date in the event of the race being cancelled due to bad weather or any other conditions that would be deemed to be unsafe for the race to proceed.
No refunds will be given for Sprint, or Half Marathon cancellations.
