We made it!

After starting the journey towards achieving carboNZeroCertTM small business enterprise certification in March 2008, Conference Innovators has achieved its goal:

"Conference Innovators Limited meets the requirements of carboNZeroCertTM certification having measured its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in compliance with ISO 14064-1, committed to managing and reducing its emissions and neutralised the remaining unavoidable emissions in respect of the operational activities of its organisation".
Authorised by: GM Technical, carboNZero programme, Landcare Research

Joy Mehlhopt, our inhouse carboNZero champion, has been working on this project for 19 months.  She has completed the surveys, sourced and collated piles of data and liaised closely with Landcare Research's carboNZeroCertTM programme to finally achieve the carboNZeroCertTM certification.  Joy notes that the length of time taken is mostly due to frequently "parking the project" due to other work pressures.

But this is just the beginning.  The carboNZero certification is valid for 12 months, so we will be audited and assessed every year by an independant auditor to make sure we maintain the right to carboNZeroCertTM small enterprise certification.

This will require an ongoing commitment from the entire CI team.  But for now, it is time to celebrate this achievement!

Cheers to our CarboNZero achievement!

Conference Innovators will manage the Second Annual Hillary Symposium: The Real New Deal - Leadership & Economic Opportunity From Climate Change Solutions.  This Symposium is by invitation only and is held on World Environment Day, June 5th 2009.

The Hillary Institute was officially launched in November 2007 and is a new New Zealand based international organisation named in recognition of the achievements and leadership of Sir Edmund Hillary. Its aim is to foster leadership in climate change solutions worldwide.

As an associate of the Institute, Conference Innovators was involved in the inaugural Symposium held last year at the Christchurch Art Gallery which featured world leading experts on climate change:

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chair of the Nobel prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
President Anote Tong, President of Kiribati
Matt Petersen, Global Green USA President
Professor David Wratt, NIWA

Conference Innovators is proud to support the Hillary Institute.

Progress is being made.  Our in house carboNZero coordinator has done an analysis of our annual office emission levels - which takes into account the usage of: power, domestic flights, personal cars and taxi usage.  CI's total emission is approximately 15 tonnes per year - which is classified as very low (any level between 0 and 50 tonnes is "low")..so we are quite chuffed.  However, improvements can still be made - especially around personal car and taxi usage. We will keep you posted.

As we are all now getting back into the routine of work again after the Christmas Holidays, we are the first to admit we have all been a bit slack with upkeeping our green practices...however, we are determined to get back on track and one of the first items on the agenda for our weekly staff meeting is "Green Tips".

Worms are out - Bokashi bucket is in. Let's see if this helps us recycle our food waste - luckily we have a garden area where we dispose of the liquid that the Bokashi bin produces - who knows, it may kick start our garden growth - maybe in a year's time we may be able to enter the Ellerslie Garden Show!

Another issue that has come to light (as the majority of us are caffeine lovers - in fact we probably accumulate enough disposable coffee cups annually to build a small village in North Africa...) - what is the easiest way to recycle them? The bottoms are 100% recyclable (after washing them of course)..but the plastic tops are not. What to do with these? Hopefully with the introduction of the City Council's new recycling initiative, this issue will be solved. Challenge - how long will it take us to fill one of the new recycling bags?

We have also committed to look at our heating options for this winter - a heater audit will be done and the question asked - is there a more efficient way we can heat this place?

December 2008
The CI Christmas cards this year have been printed on 100% recyclable paper.

17 November 2008
As we are coming to the end of our busy season - it is now time for CI to reassess their green processes after the past 9 months. We will be looking at our progress and see if we can identify areas that we can improve on.

30 June 2008
Well, a decision had to be made...the worms just weren't keeping up! We have decided that "self responsibility" will be the course of action for our in-house green waste. Everyone now takes home their own food scraps for responsible disposal. So it is goodbye to the worm farm...until the day comes when "commercial worms" can be farmed!

11 June 2008
CI opens a business account with Green Cabs. Green Cabs has a fleet of Hybrid Toyota Prius cars that have been designed to reduce the amount of pollution and to maximize fuel efficiency.

21 April 2008
The fun begins – the worm farm is installed in the carpark. All foodscraps from the kitchen are being placed into benchtop containers and fed to the worms on a regular basis. We are yet to find out how much they can eat – perhaps we can use them to shred some of our papers as well?

Double siding photocopying is to be encouraged via the use of a prompt at the photocopier which also provides step by step instructions for this process.

10 April 2008
NZAEP Seminar on Environmental Sustainability – attended by a CI Director.

9 April 2008
The first stationery and kitchen/bathroom supplies orders are made using the “as green as possible” mantra when selecting goods. The kitchen now boasts eco-friendly dishwashing liquid, the bathroom – earth-friendly toilet paper. The stationery department now boasts recycled “post it's”.

A staff member has researched courier packs and found some that are biodegradable. As stocks of the plastic options are used up they will be replaced with this option.

Print Material – discussion around setting up requests for quotes from printers that include ‘green’ options.

Two clients – Local Government New Zealand and The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners have their registration brochures printed on Ecosl2 paper 100% recycled post consumer, FSC, certified pulp, process chlorine free, 5 star in the Government 3 star rating system using vegetable oil based inks.

Satchels made from recycled plastic bottles are ordered for LGNZ even though they are more expensive than other options.

3 April 2008
A list of tasks relating to the ‘greening’ of CI is prepared and discussed with the management team.
- Staff are reminded to put all paper out into the shredding bin for recyling.
- Staff now turn off computer screens when they depart the building and office lights when they go out during the day as well as in the evening.
- New Equipment being budgeted for is reviewed with ‘green initiatives’ in mind e.g. photocopier/printer/scanner.

2 April 2008
Staff member attends the Eco Forum on sustainability run by the Employers Chamber of Commerce.

28 March 2008
Advised by Landcare Research to wait for a new package aimed at smaller businesses due to be launched mid-April.

27 March 2008
Application made to Landcare Research to join the carboNZero Cert TM programme. Information supplied to Landcare Research so that they can prepare a cost estimate.

A folder is set up in the shared drive called “Green” and staff are invited to save information/documents into this area for everyone to access.

March 2008
The decision has been made and staff have committed to the process - where to from here?
