Brian Hanna was first elected to Waitomo council in 2004, spending 6 years as a rural councillor, prior to winning the Mayoralty in 2010. He is currently in his second term as mayor.
When the Waikato Mayoral Forum took on a much greater role in collaborative work, Brian was at the forefront of these activities. Brian saw great benefit in being Mayor of a small council and having the opportunity to work closely with the larger Waikato Councils across shared services and collaborative planning.
Brian is involved in many regional activities, is Deputy Chair of the Waikato Mayoral Forum, and holds positions on the Sport Waikato Board, representing Waikato Councils. His passion for roading sees him representing the Mayoral Forum in the governance of the roading workstream
Brian is a member of the Collaborative Stakeholder Group working on a proposed plan change as part of the Healthy Rivers focus on improving the state of the Waikato and Waipa River systems. Brian, along with his wife Andrea has a passion for sustainable farming system, having been recognised as past Supreme Balance Farm Environment winners.
