Functional Appliances: Changing the Growing Face
Having qualified in Dublin, Ireland, he moved to London where he trained at The Eastman, Royal Dental and Great Ormond Street Hospitals before being appointed Consultant at The London Hospital in Whitechapel. He started the Postgraduate Training Programme in 1983 at the hospital with 2 trainees annually. The programme currently has 17 trainees and 6 senior trainees. He has been Clinical Director of the Dental Hospital and Chairman of the National Training Committee in Orthodontics, as well as Chairman of the M.Orth. Examination, R.C.S. Eng.
He presents annual courses to all U.K. trainees on functional appliances, straight wire appliances and space planning. He is currently the Chief Investigator on a number of clinical trials on functional appliances, bracket systems, and soft tissue changes following surgery. He has a particular interest in the clinical application of soft tissue laser scanning and has published more than 40 articles on clinical orthodontics. He also maintains a part-time private practice. |

The Clinical Effects of Functional Appliances on the Hard and Soft Tissues of the Face Date: Thursday 1 July Time: 10:30am – 11:30am Objectives: To identify the research problems. To report on clinical trials. To show techniques for measuring hard and soft tissue effects. To establish clinical protocols for timing and duration of treatment.
Learning Outcome: Participants should be able to diagnose appropriate patients for appliance treatment, and provide Twin Blocks of appropriate design for a sufficient duration. They should be able to correct significant Class II cases and achieve a stable result. |
Arch Form
Date: Friday 2 July
Time: 11:30am – 12:30pm
This topic will consider growth changes and stability and the effects of arch form alteration. It will identify the patients suitable for deliberate arch form changes. It will quantify the space created by intervention.
Learning Outcome: Participants should be able to realistically plan for arch dimensional changes with expansion and contraction and should avoid unstable non-biological tooth movements and should be considering the aesthetic requirements in relation to stability.

Self-Ligation: Evolution or Revolution?
Date: Friday 2 July
Time: 1:30pm – 3:00pm
This presentation will report on clinical trials using different self-ligating systems. It will consider the implications of bracket design and archwires on tooth movement and will provide guidelines for case management.
Learning Outcome: Participants should be able to select an appropriate self-ligation system and plan a satisfactory and efficient sequence for the bracket type. They should critically evaluate the quality of the result achieved and the nature of the tooth movement.

Orthodontic Space Planning
Date: Saturday 3 July
Time: 9:00am – 10:00am
This topic will identify all the elements which contribute to space within the dentition. It will apply space planning in exploring treatment options. It will help in enabling clinicians to establish realistic treatment objectives.
Learning Outcome: Participants should be able to clearly establish space requirements and should plan more efficiently integrating clinical examination, reference models and cephalometric information. It will allow clinicians to ensure informed consent to the treatment approach.

Functional Appliances: Changing the Growing Face
Date: Thursday 1 July
Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm
This presentation will report on the long-term use of functional appliances. It will explain the relevance of clinical research and will relate treatment changes to growth changes.
Learning Outcome:
Participants should understand the objectives of functional appliances. They should be aware of the potential of appliances and the limitations. They should be in a better position to encourage young adolescents to embark on therapy.
