Carol Stone
For 29 years Carol has worked for the Auckland District Health Board’s Regional Cancer and Blood Service. During that time Carol has seen significant growth in Cancer care, considerable development of the nursing service and the  ensuing challenges. In 2000, Carol became the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Radiation Therapy with the responsibility to provide nursing leadership and develop nursing  as a speciality in this area. This includes liaison with the wider Multidisciplinary team.

A part of Carol’s role is the involvement with Radiation clinical trials and is currently the nursing representative for a large longitudinal study in Breast Cosmesis following Surgery and Radiation Therapy for women with Breast Cancer.

Kathy Yallop
My current role is Clinical Nurse Specialist, co-ordinator of the Late Effects Assessment Programme (LEAP), Paediatric Haematology/Oncology Unit, Starship Children’s Health.

I have worked within the Paediatric Haematology/Oncology Service for the past 12 years in a variety of nursing roles and was Charge Nurse Manager of the Unit for 3 years until 2006.

It was at that time the opportunity arose to develop and implement the long term follow-up programme for survivors of childhood cancer in the Auckland region, this was in response to the international recognition of the significant late effects of childhood cancer therapy.  It has been a challenging and exciting process and at nearly the four year mark, the LEAP programme is now well integrated into the continuum of childhood cancer care nationally.

An audit of survivor and family satisfaction of the programme was conducted last year and validated the necessity and importance of a comprehensive follow-up programme.

I am currently involved in a study looking at the self-reported health and psychosocial wellbeing of adolescent childhood cancer survivors in New Zealand.
